As an artist myself, I find the curator's suggestion about what constitutes artistic originals troubling. If an artist creates, or manipulates an object in such a way that is not an identical print or reproduction and said object has an identifying element, however so slight, that makes it different from another creation that is similar, they are in fact both artistic originals. I have created hand drawn pen and ink originals in a limited edition that are nearly identical, but by virtue of the hand drawing process they are inevitable slightly different. It is impossible to make them identical...we are human after all, not machines. That's what photocopiers are for. I recently saw a fascinating install of works by Picasso at the Bellagio here in Las Vegas where a series of his original lithographs showed the evolution of a single concept from beginning to end. The were well over a dozen pieces in the series, each unique. The transition from one piece to the next was sometimes very subtle and other times dramatic, but they are all originals.
Best regards to all, happy hunting, and have a great summer!
