Hello List, I have two questions, first, does anyone know how many different classifications there are, including irons? Second, as Mat Morgan proved with his new H/L 3-4, we have not seen them all. Would you guess we have only seen a small percentage of the meteorites out there (still in space) ? Thanks, Tom Peregrineflier <>< The proudest member of the IMCA 6168

Tom: You may want to start here on David Weir's awesome website... http://www.geocities.com/~dweir/systemat.htm
My guess is that you could get numerous different classes, especially with transitional chondrites and those (type 3's) where one could break out the sub-type. Problem is, it is difficult to break these out if the researcher does not have exteremly well-calibrated and accurate equipment. Plus it takes time, and with all these NWAs, they have to prioritize.
