I just remembered where I had seen those translucent o-rings before. Go to a sporting goods store and ask at the counter for paintball supplies. O-rings used in the innards of paintball guns are those translucent-to-white silicon rubber jobbies.

What I would like to mention is that the Apple Rubber company in NY (no, they
aren't that kind of company) make all sizes of o-rings and are especially
noted for the manufacture of silicon o-rings in just about any color you can
think of including a translucent uncolored one.
If anyone were to go into a scuba store and tell them you need a few spare
black o-rings, they might just give you a few for free. A scuba tank uses an
o-ring as the contact between its valve and that of the regulator's first stage.
Most all divers carry a few spares in their gearbags just in case - even
if a scuba store wanted to sell you a few rather than giving them away, they're
dirt cheap...especially compared to that specimen you're wanting to protect.
