Rene,

You shouldn’t really  put WD-40 on meteorites, I made that mistake once, they will eventually (over time) start to rust, WD-40 actually contains a lot of water. But because it also contains oils, the WD-40/Water is trapped making matters worse!

Gun oil, is good, also I have found pure silicone oil is also quite good if not better. Most oils absorb a small amount of water eventually, so always use fresh clean stuff.

Subject: [meteorite-list] [meteorite-list]rusting question

Hello,

I am new collector of meteorites and I have a question.

Can a lubricant such as WD-40 or breakfree be used on iron meteorite to protect them from rust? Or will this hurt them?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
