So… why not just threaten this seller with potential Mail Fraud…

He is in the 4 digit bilking phase, and the government really frowns on that.

Selling meteorite NOT'S on EBAY (minerals... aka rare minerals with future values investment possibilities like gold, silver or gems , in which meteorites come under that description) is not an EBAY problem.

It is like blaming a newspaper for someone who issues a classified ad for silver ingots (when they are really silver painted lead) with the purpose of bilking someone.

The issue becomes U.S. Government Mail Fraud, when someone attempts to ship such false item to unsuspecting persons not only through the US Post office, but by ANY RECOGNIZED COMMON CARRIER.

This is the threat that should be sent to the seller of such items, and EBAY cannot hold anyone liable for providing such information to the seller, if the seller does not provide reasonable evidence of the legitimacy of these mineral items beforehand.

"Advise" like this to fraudulent seller as such, cannot be considered harassment. Take it to the bank. EBAY is not the problem... crooks are the problem, and always will be. Threaten them with something that is more that an idle threat. You can report them directly via the US Mail Fraud agency, right on the web, and they (unlike EBAY) will ALWAYS get back to you looking for more information, not with a canned disclaimer.

Note the interesting way of wording their disclaimer...

<<  Due to the exposure of scientific misconduct, BCC Meteorites does not have a reciprocal professional working relationship with the Meteoritical Society nor the Nomenclature Committee. >>

I know the MetSoc is reluctant to engage in highly visible hand-to-hand combat with every nut that comes along, and rightly so, but surely there's a line in the sand somewhere.   The Meteoritical Society has been insulted here, and not particularly subtly....nothing to get litigious over certainly, but at least worthy of a LITTLE self-defense?     Jeff G.?    Anything we can do to help?
