Hi Mark
The piles of rock you mentioned are marking where meteorites have been found. Did you notice that most had a small flag in them? When finding a meteorite we always scour the area carefully to make sure that there are no other obvious meteorites around. Several have been found using this methodology. In fact in October I found two meteorite 18" apart and they fit together. When scouring the area we then pick up all rocks in the area and use them to help find the location later. After time the wind strips the flag off the wire. Remember the GPS will only get you within a few feet.
My friend Kim Cathcart has found over 60 meteorites on the lake and I have found 5 so you should see a lot of flags on the lake. Additionally all of the finds are reported to Rob Matson and Bob Verish for future study purposes. I would recommend that anyone else who finds a meteorite on Roach report your find information to them as well. Remember the better the information the more valuable it will be in the future.
Generally it is a good idea to stay away from the areas where the cars travel. Very few meteorites have been found in this area any way. It is best to stay closer the edges. I would guess that 70-80% have been found within 150-200' of the edge. All of mine have.
Happy hunting
Congratulations everybody on the finds I know how hard they are to come by.
Mike
