A quick correction to my own mistake before someone else points it out. I came into possession of the letter three or four years ago...it wasn't written then.

Three or four years ago, a letter written by H.H. Nininger himself told the story about the recovery of the Clover Springs, Arizona mesosiderite. In the letter, he stated that the original finder, a cowboy from Strawberry and Camp Verde, had marked the location with a rock cairn. During our trips to the area to hunt form more of the meteorite; Dave Andrews, John Blennert and I must have found thirty or more cairns. Although we didn't find any more of the meteorite, it was always exciting to walk through the forest and come upon one of these stone monuments.

Maybe we'll get luck next time.

You're on to me! While I admit to a certain altruism for helping
my fellow meteorite hunters by piling up all the offending rocks, my
subconscious plan all along has been to build a sort of "Kilroy was
here" legacy with all these cairns. Hard not to be motivated to
leave some lasting calling card when you find so many Native American
artifacts while searching for meteorites. Unfortunately, Mother
Nature does not share my enthusiasm for "tagging": it is amazing
how quickly these cairns get scattered by water and wind. --Rob
