OR, you can buy your meteorites from those you trust: Dean, Mike, Jim, the other Jim, Bill, Blaine, Anne, Matt, Robert, Ken, Mark, Adam, Bob, Dave, Dave, Dave, mike, and the other mike, Michael, Paul, John, Walter, Bernd, Fred, the other Fred, Ron, (and not the other Ron whose name we do not know) . There are so many great dealers out there, why bother with someone not totally bonified? Those that you know and trust deserve your business. **DEAR LIST NEWBIES** That is my tip of the week! Support our working dealers.
I am sorry if I inadvertently left some out as I could list another 20 names here. If it is an unknown, and they are not an IMCA member, that might be a thought to ponder, that is what we set it up for. If the deal can be transferred on ebay, and you can use the sellers feed back as a tool that may be wise as well.
Buying blindly to save a buck is silly, and a bit greedy. Just remember the circus at Park Forest about a year ago!
My favorite old axiom, "junk in junk out" could apply here. Those that try to get something for nothing sometimes get more wisdom instead of the value of the product.
Again, with so many very reputable dealers gathered here, at the shows, on ebay, on the IMCA web page, why play around with your money to relative unknowns? Most dealers can get most meteorites from most anywhere, and be for the most part, very competitive at pricing.
Very Best and thanks to our great dealers who work hard to supply us with good deals and a wide selection!

If it is a private individual who contacted you with a
deal that's to good to be true I would be wary. If it
is one of the 3 dealers farmer mentioned earlier you
can feel safe as I have spent thousands of dollars
with them (I even stay at Rodrigos house when in Chile
- really nice guy). I have herd a dozen or more
stories from people who sent money to Morocco to buy
some NWAs really cheap (Always under 10 cents a gram)
and whom they never herd from again after sending the
money and nobody in Morocco ever herd of them either
(A couple of the people who got scammed were customers
of mine and I tried to help them out by doing a little
research so I am familiar with those scams). Maybe you
can check phone listings or something to see if they
real people - although that is not as easy to do as it
is in North America and could well not be possible.
Try getting their phone number and calling them. You
should be able to make a 10 minute phone call to
anywhere in south america using a phone card for $5 or
less. Might be worth it. There are some people in Africa scamming offering Gao
meteorites also.
I am not familiar with any major scams involving
meteorites in South America so I cant give you any
specific warnings of what to look for in this regard.
If they are the ones who contacted you first the you
can try to get them to send you the rocks before
receiving payment. After all, they know who you are
and should have more trust of you.
Just an idea
Hope this helps.
Cheers

I meant. If it is a private person, there is
substantial risk involved.

Mike,
Thats part of the problem. This wasn't a dealer. I
believe it was a private
individual.
Thanks, Bill
I buy from all over the world, it is a risk, but
the first advice would be
wanting to buy from.to ask the list if they know the dealer you are
I buy from Hans Koser, Rodrigo Martinez, and
Eduardo often, never a problem.

Subject: [meteorite-list] completing a purchase
Hi all,
Recently I had the opportunity to purchase a
meteorite from South America.
I
wasn't sure how to go about exchanging the
money for the specimen with any
kind of assurance that I wouldn't get ripped
off. Since I balked, I missed
out on the chance. What's the recommended
procedure used to negotiate a
long
distance transaction?
Thanks!
