(OK, OK, in retrospect I suppose I should have posted all this a few days ago, on April First!  Just trying to lighten things up a little, after a pretty difficult list-week....)

In answer to the question I posed in the original subject line.....the only part of the front-page 1883 story I didn't quote was the first paragraph, consisting of these two sentences:

"The following from yesterdays' associate press dispatches, would, but for a single reason, attract the attention of scientific men the world over.  The reason is there is absolutely no truth in the story:".

I suppose we can only liken this to the tabloids today, with their "Three-headed baby born to Margaret Thatcher, Proud Tom the father?" headlines.  At least this story admits to be being fictional, right from the git-go.
