Hi List and Randy
Seems to me that the few true auctions I've been to
that when the auctioneer wants to close the sale, he says "going going gone" (to
paraphrase what they actually say, but you get the idea) and this doesn't occur
over a five minute period. It happens within 30-60 seconds max depending on how
fast the auctioneer needs to move. I'm sure if you went to the high dollar
houses, where 100's of thousands if not millions are bid upon things, the
auctioneer might take his time, big bucks bring big commissions! So don't go
talking true venue when all auctioneers typically go to a school which teaches
them the ethics and motions which pretty much follow the same guidelines across
the nation (guess you've never been to wall street either, I understand they
move so fast a five minute lull would mean the house has shut down for
some reason)
Do I like getting outbid, no, sure don't. Do I?
Very often and theres not much I can do about it. I'm often out bid early on
too, so it doesn't matter if theres a bidding war or sniper tactics
involved...I'm usually checking out the final price as a spectator
anyway.
In either case, bid war or sniping, I find ebay to
be a fun venue and have aquired many nice specimens and such on thereas well as
needed things. So, lets not bash the system since it is one of the few true
internet business successes. I actually have a beef with how they change the
look of ebay every time you turn around more than anything else.
But thats the personal side of it, and each of us
look at things differently. That is what makes it nice, we're all individuals
and see the world a little (sometimes a lot) differently.
