Dear List,

I may have just posted this, but the post did not appear to go through correctly, and I made mistakes in my report. Please disregard the previous post

I saw the large fireball that was seen last night over parts of the southern USA.  I saw it as I was driving northwest on highway 63 towards Jonesboro Arkansas at 9:21pm. It was located more or less towards the SOUTHWEST and descended to a rather low angle above the horizen. I cannot provide very good info on location and direction as I never had a chance to put it on my fovea. Here is what I can say

I was driving at a high speed in heavy traffic when a brilliant light appeared to my LEFT.

I first thought that I was being passed by a truck

Then when I turned my head to look at it I briefly saw the fireball descend towards the horizen, moving downwards and towards the right. Then it went out within 20 degrees of the horizen

It was much brighter than the full moon and rather orangish in color.

For a few seconds I wondered whether it had been a meteoric fireball or fireworks. However, the fact that it had illuminated the cirrus clouds in that part of the sky made me quickly conclude that it was not fireworks.

My wife also saw it for an instant after I shouted about it. She noted that it appeared to fragment into many patches of orange light within a larger blob of whiter illumination

Hopefully it produced some meteorites, and someone will have the good luck to find them.

Sincerely,

Stephen McMann
