FALLING METEOR DIGS UP TURNIPS
Another Celestial Visitor Nearly Destroys Silo.
Explosions That Were Heard for a Long Distance Occur When Meteors Hit the Ground - Both Are Buried Deep in the Earth.
Batavia, Nov. 21. - Meteors have fallen in the vicinity of East Bethany on three nights within a week, exploding, evidently, when they struck the ground with a noise that was heard for a long distance.
One meteor fell in John D. McNally's barnyard, grazing his silo, marks made by it in its fall being left on the side of the structure from top to bottom. Beside the site was a hole in the ground, only a few inches in diameter, where the meteor had buried itself.
Another meteor fell on the same farm Wednesday night, with an extraordinarily loud explosion. and Thursday morning McNally found that he had been saved the trouble of digging the turnips in a small patch in his garden. The meteor heard the night before had struck squarely in the center of the patch, throwing the turnips out of the ground and burying itself apparently to a great depth. Mr. McNally has made no effort to unearth either of the meteors, but he expects to do so.
Young men driving between East Bethany and Pavilion one night this week reported a meteor falling some distance ahead of them, and an instant later heard an explosion similar to that made by the discharge of a heavily loaded gun.
