1,000kg of meteoric rocks collected from Dhofar and Wusta regions

MUSCAT — The geological activities carried out by the Directorate-General of
Minerals at the
Commerce and Industry Ministry to preserve meteorites have resulted in
collecting 1,000kg of
meteoric rocks in Dhofar governorate and the Wusta region.

This was stated by Dr Salim bin Hamad Al Busaidi, director of geological
department at the
directorate.

He told ONA that “this wide collection of meteorites is a scientifically
important sample as it
helps better understand the origins of the universe and the rock components of
celestial bodies
surrounding the earth”.

Dr Salim said the mining law issued by Royal Decree No. 27/2003 had prohibited
the practice of all
rock and mineral mining and exploratory activities and trading in the same
without obtaining
permissions from the Directorate-General of Minerals. — ONA
