Hello Bob, John, and List
Thanks and I figured there were others that had the same experience and
although I refuse to surf on the wave of slams I do see that perhaps those
folks have had similar jolts or rude awakenings somewhere along the way
Dealing with this person and well.....
I just felt that I should mention my experience simply because early on
after I joined this list to learn about meteorites, which by the way I am
and have found more good information here than anywhere on the net. I just
didn't understand why the "poor" guy was under constant harassment that to
an outsider or newbie to the list may seem as totally unjust as it did at
times to me, but I have an open mind.
I agree now with some that it is good to expose such underhanded dealings to
protect others and this I believe is one of the very reasons for this list.
It is also important to expose some of the respected dealers here from time
to time for their great service and willingness to go out of there way for a
good customer. Some names come to mind here, but this is not the time (grin)
I mean the man no harm, but also I want to perhaps help make sure someone
else doesn't have to go through getting their little feelings hurt like I
and others have (grin) Heck to someone that goes out into these deserts to
look for and find these specimens they are...Well important (to me anyway)
and science too ;)

Hello Bill and List,
Some of you might not know Bill Southern since he is relatively new to the
Meteorite List. I know him personally. He's a really great guy and is one
of the most accommodating and selfless people I know. Take note of what
he's saying - I know he had to twist his own arm quite hard to speak up on
this issue.
Maybe those of you that shake your finger at the "naysayers" need to take
a look at this Steve issue from a different angle.
There are many of us within the meteorite community who think it is our
responsibility, in part, to make sure the public is dealt with fairly and
honestly and that is one of the reasons Steve Arnold is scrutinized the
way he is. I find it hard to believe that those of you that openly
support Steve because he gave you a freebie or he acts like a generous
benefactor refuse to look at his other activities without your rose
colored glasses.
Sure, there are some things about Steve that make him a likeable guy to
some people, but I know many others who have had negative dealings with
him and their voices have a right to be heard too.
Finally, I don't think any of you "anti-naysayer" have the right to censor
those who speak out about wrong doing or excessive self promotion by a
list member. Do you condone the deceit and dishonesty?
Feel free to comment,
JKGwilliam

Sorry for piggy backing in on this post, but for some reason my last 3

I was just going to let this go, but seeing some folks not understanding
how
this fellow operates I have decided to tell a short story about my first
dealings with Steve A. from Chicago (Elgin) IL.
I was actually taken in by a request for some Franconia irons a few weeks
back which I hunt for and find myself here in Arizona, by Steve. Now I
hunt
these and take pride in my finds and picked out some very nice little
irons
and also a slice of about 1.5 grams or so of the H5 chondrite thought to
be
the source of the small and very unique irons and sent them to Steve as a
gift thinking he would add them to his collection.
A few days later they show up for sale on ebay...Didn't sell there so he
put
them in his sale...Needless to say I felt sort of stupid and taken for the
proverbial ride. This was my first and LAST experience with Mr. Arnold. I
emailed him asking about it and got no reply.
Yes it is true that they are his do with as he pleases, but I feel I
should
have been told before sending them to him that he intended to sell them
and
not keep them. His pretence was owning some for his collection in his
request. Alas I am fond of learning some things the hard way, but just
once
:)
Whoops...Bill

Hi Mark and all,
Perhaps if the anti-spam "Steve" posts were aimed directly to Steve email
it would be better. However I feel if Steve is allowed to post all of
these ads then certainly people who don't agree should be allowed to post
their concerns related to his spams. (and there is certainly others who
violate the list rules related to ad posting).
I think that people should be aware that steve has a nasty habit of
breaking his specimens. Although I know of others who do this, I doubt
that steve is using a breaker. I have no doubt that steve has ruin a
number of good specimens and the people who support him, buy from him,
take him up on his free offers, are supporting this vandalism to
priceless meteorites. You are in effect in partnership with someone who
is destroying some fine meteorites. If Steve were a real dealer, he would
invest in a breaking device, or saw and cut these specimens rather than
commit the horrible demise of some fine specimens.
People that sell to him and people who buy or accept free offers have no
real interest in meteorites.
