Hello List,

Originally, "orientated" was only used to indicate that something inside a
meteorite
was arranged or aligned in a certain way: a preferred direction in a crystal
lattice,
in the matrix of a chondrite or in the matrix of an iron meteorite, etc.

Examples:

Borkut (L5) - elliptical chondrules are orientated.

Canyon City (IIIAB) - The individual 50-100 ยต wide alpha-grains of the fields
are differently
orientated, as is evidenced by the various orientations of the
epsilon-structure in them.

DaG 995 (AEUC) - plagioclase contains small crystallographically orientated
inclusions
of augite, pigeonite and silica.

A. Fujimura et al. (1983) Preferred orientation of phyllosilicate (001) in
matrix of Murchison
meteorite and possible mechanisms of generating the orientated texture in
chondrites
(Earth Plan.Sci.Lett. 66, 25-32).

But over time, especially since the 1980s, "orientated" also came to be used
to
denote "flight-oriented". Examples:

El Carmen (H6) - A single, orientated mass weighing 629 g was found.

Lone Tree (H4) - An orientated, weathered mass of 20.676 kg was ploughed up.

Mount Margaret (L5) - A single, flight orientated stone was found.

Summerfield (L5) - A single orientated stone of 6.2 kg was found.

Waka (H6) - A single, orientated mass weighing 11.875 kg was found.

Cheers,

Bernd
