Hummm just a SWAG here but ...atmospheric transit at 36,000kps±, raising surface temps to an excess of 1400°C± followed by rapid quenching of the remaining surface to below 600°C? Maybe I am delving too far into fantasy. My second guess would be a meteorite gnome?
