As to Garmin units, I have settled on 3 units from the RNIO series for a the following reasons especially related to search party activities. The 110 is a basic GPS/radio grayscale screen on par with the eTrex. A bit jazzier are 120 and 130 also grayscale while the 520-530 have color screens. Accessories include power and data cables for powering from your auto and /or feeding data into your laptop's mapping program.
They all contain FRS/GRS(up to 14 miles)capable two way radios so you can carry one less gadget. Multiple codes allow private communications with the other members in the party. They of course work with other FRS/GRS units. They can poll your other member's Rino units and update their location on your own unit. Good when working a grid/pattern. The 120-130-520-530 models have a 7 channel weather radio receiver so yet one more gadget can stay home. The 120-130-520-530 come with a database of several thousand cities and towns (plus streets and roads) from all around the world--in case you have to catch a plane to the next fall in Africa without your printed maps.
