Clean it with Bar Keepers Friend available at Wal-Mart.
It is a cleanser type cleaner that comes in a gold can similar in size and shape to a can of Comet.
All you have to do is dampen the slice with hot TAP water, rub on a thick paste and let it sit about 30 seconds then rinse it off with hot tap water and dry it with paper towels.
Yes I said tap water, I clean my spheres the same way every couple of months and have zero rust issues.
Not only will the Bar Keepers Friend will remove the rust and it will make the etch look better.
