What we are talking about here are most likely lava tubes. These cave like structures can run for miles and be quite large and complicated. When the surface is too near, the tube collapses, creating windows, or if you are in the cave, skylights. Relax, this is a perfectly good description.

Oh, god. Thanks a lot, NASA, for using terms like "windows". How stupid are you? Hand-feeding conspiracy nuts, who now for decades to come we'll be hearing taling about the underground rooms and their windows, left by the Martians.
Couldn't you have TRIED to use less anthropomorphic terms?  Shesh....
