Actually, Doug, the original Maya were sea going. When they first lived in 
Guatamala, the first domesticated corn came up along the Pacific coast via 
their trade. See "Man and Impact in the Americas". 

As far as impact events goes, the classic Maya even had one word for it 
"tz'oc", versus the two words we have to use in English.

Not only do the Palenque inscriptions give the date for the Rio Cuarto Impacts, 
they also give the date for Campo de Cielo, which also hit at "Matawil".
