Well written overall, though I learned a couple interesting things:
First...
"Before it hit the ground, the meteor would have fragmented into dozens or
hundreds of pieces, each about the size of a *football* or smaller."
And, (directed at meteorite hunters)...
"There's nothing dangerous about them, nothing poisonous, nothing
radioactive."
Oh, thank God for that. I was worried there, for a while! <g>
