I'm just guessing, but  if Mt. St. Helens ash attracts to a rare earth 
magnet, I suppose all volcanic  ash will do the same. It didn't jump to it like 
a nail would, but it had just  amount attraction as a stony chondrite. It 
might be expecting a little too much  from Granny's pot holder magnet to do 
the same though..
