Yes there are. Only a very few of these, who are doing the field work and who brought and are bringing the largest part of the world meteorite inventory to the labs, institutes and museums do have an academic degree in geology. And each amateur purchasing a meteorite contributes to science in helping these people to continue their work. Best!
