Plot thickens...?
The flight path of the US Airways flight which left Hawaii, and landed
in Phoenix does in fact cross Catalina island.
Due west of Catalina is San Nicolas Island.
"...in 2004 and 2010, U.S. military research rockets were launched from
San Nicolas Island. The launchpad was situated at 33°15′N 119°30′W /

Missile Range..." SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Nicolas_Island
"...The San Nicolas Island Vandal Launch Pad launch complex is capable
of supporting missile (Tomahawk & RAM) and missile targets (Vandal)
launches. Launch complex's, ordnance handling, and a remote/secure
environment provides an ideal location for weapons T&E. Many of the
targets routinely used on the Sea Range (the BQM-34 and BQM-74 series
and the MQM-8G) are launched from either the Point Mugu Surface Launch
Complex at Building 55 or from additional specialized launch facilities
on San Nicolas Island. ..." SOURCE -

Hi Count,
Quite a few pieces of evidence against a missile launch:
1. Military says they didn't launch anything
2. No NOTAM submitted (in heavily congested int'l airport corridor)
3. SLBMs never launch from coastal California waters
4. No upper atmospheric, differential wind shear of the plume
5. Contrail grew far too slowly for a missile launch
6. Contrail did not persist after sunset (no twilight glow)
7. No corresponding high-speed, high-altitude object on radar

Hello Richard and Listoids,
The subject contrail/combustion byproduct/condensation trail was not made by a
turbojet powered aircraft. There is only one trail and it displays a massive
constant volume atypical of conventional multi-engine aircraft which display a
separate condensation trail from each engine. High altitude can make an
airliner's condensation trails look like a single artifact, but when seen
closer you easily can count the engines by the individual trails.
The volume and density of this trail belie any water condensed trail I have
seen from an aircraft. The trail of a rocket powered X15 isn't anywhere near as
massive as this dude.. In my learned opinion, this missle was powered by a
single (non-staging) big ass, solid fuel rocket engine. It looks like your
standard submarine launched ICBM going down range to our Pacific Test Area.
Did you see the helicopter hovering in an observing position?
Best,
Count Deiro

OK
I'd like to see the third one i more detail, but its probably a contrail.
