Thanks for that, Darren. I found it particularly interesting because I started my own archaeological career in the early 80s in a similar way. Here in the UK the Manpower Services Commission set up job creation schemes for the long-term unemployed. Not that I am drawing comparisons between America's Great Depression and Thatcherite Britain!
