Signing the cards is just another step in fraud protection, but as anyone who appreciates collecting autographs understands, signatures are very easy to forge, and most all fake signatures are accompanied by a "certificate of authenticity". While it would make it more difficult to reproduce, if someone so desired to fake the specimen cards with signatures, it would not be a difficult undertaking.
That said, specimen cards are absolutely essential to record keeping, provenance, and chain of custody, but caution should always be exercised, with any "signature" or certificate of authenticity.
