Hi Ryan, the term "planetary" in the context of meteoritics is applied to meteorites not stemming from asteroids, but from larger celestial bodies, which were for a longer period geologically active, hence from Planet Mars, the Moon and some reckon also those from planetoid Vesta among them.
When it was firstly used, I don't know. Best, Martin -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Im Auftrag von [email protected] Gesendet: Freitag, 18. Who in the world ever came up with the term "Planetary" in reference to meteorites. First of all, our Moon isn't a planet.. and secondly, to my knowledge, the only "Planetary" meteorites in current existence have an origin of Mars. Hence, "Martian" meteorites. Did I miss the big announcement of those from Venus and Mercury?
