Area man finds possible meteorite By Chris WalkerIndependentPosted May 26, 2011 @ 12:29 PM Newport, Ark. —Hickory Ridge resident Larry Brand found what he believes is a small rock from outer space.Brand said he was searching for arrowheads between Newport and Amagon when he found the unusual stone.McCartney Melville Taylor, a meteorite enthusiast, offered a reward of 5-thousand dollars to anyone that locates a chunk of the Newport meteorite in an article published in the Independent during November of 2009. Brand plans to contact Taylor to find out if his rock is indeed a meteorite.The rules for the contest are as follows:1. Only the first person to submit a Newport meteorite will collect the prize.2. The meteorite must be confirmed by an appointed lab or curator to be a piece of the Newport pallasite meteorite.3. The meteorite find location must be disclosed, and the location must be known to within +/- 0.5 mile.4. The finder must be willing to pose for a photo with the meteorite and sign a release to use the photo. This is an 80 year old tradition.5. The finder will not share the find location with anyone else for 1 year. This allows research and recovery efforts to be undisturbed by trespassers and give time for the author to draft and publish a scientific paper.6.
