Hello Miguel,
Your response to my recent question was much appreciated, and I've come
across another I'd like to run by you.
In reading through the available METRo literature, the model seems to
have some nice capabilities when it comes to running without certain
data, but I'd like to understand this better. In particular, from
Crevier and Delage (2001), /
" Should surface observations be missing for a period exceeding 4 h,
METRo will start the initialization after this 4-h period using an
analytical solution to the heat-conduction equation. This solution is
based on a sinusoidal road-surface temperature diurnal cycle of fixed
amplitude. If observations are completely missing during the
initialization phase, the latter method will provide the initial profile
for the coupling phase or even for the forecast itself if observations
are also missing during the coupling (the minimal requirement to run a
METRo forecast is one observed or estimated road-surface temperature at
initial time)."

The above discusses mainly surface temperature observations. I have many
sites that provide surface temperature data, but nothing below the
surface. Does the above mean that if METRo is run iteratively it will
build something of a sub-surface 'history' for these sites from
forecasted data, from which it can draw on to create new forecasts? Or
will each run of the METRo model require at least one surface AND one
sub-surface observation to get going.
Thanks much for your time,
Jon
Hi Jonathan,
We already had some discussions about this on the METRo mailing list. I
suggest you dig into the archive:

Using google to help you in your investigations might be a good idea. Ex:
