Editor's Log
>From the Super Bowl to the Season Opener
The Super Bowl last week was the season-ending finale for football fans. But
peek around the corner of your TV, now that the big game's over, and you may
discover that a fresh, new season - spring - awaits you there. Even while
winter snowstorms blanket the eastern states, spring has softly tiptoed into
sunny Arizona here where Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits is headquartered nearby
majestic Lake Powell. If you know where and what to look, you'll spot the
year's first seedlings crowning out of the crunchy desert sand and the first
few lizards have crawled out of winter hibernation. No matter where you are, no
matter how much snow you shoveled last week, it won't be long now. Hang in
there.

If you live in the more clement regions of the country, another sure sign of
spring is that local tournament events may have already or will soon kick-off
in your area for the 2010 season.

These events are a great way to compare your skills to other good bass anglers
in your area. You'll see the same guys at every tournament. It's often the only
time you get to see some of these anglers such as those who travel from
out-of-town. The season opener is a reunion or reconfirmation of spring and old
acquaintances. In terms of camaraderie and competition, I suppose it is not
that different from a bowling league or summer softball league, except you
don't need a sophisticated electronic-laden, gas-guzzling high performance boat
to make strike, a spare or play shortstop and the bass tournament cash prizes
essentially come out of your pocket and go, more often than not, to the same
hot handful of winners, which can get expensive if you are not one of them.

Yesterday, I turned the aisle in the grocery store, and had a head-on cart
collision with Bobby Yniguez, an old local tournament angling friend. It's a
good thing all the eggs in my wagon had their seat belts on. After we exchanged
insurance cards, Bobby asked me with exuberance, "Do you think dropshotting
will be good for the tournament season opener here in a few short weeks?"

Bobby was talking about Ultimate Bass Team Tour. It is a brand new team trail
that's coming to the southwestern states and will be holding their first events
this spring with six divisions that encompass Nevada, northern Arizona,
southern Utah and New Mexico. Click here to learn more about:

Ultimate Bass Team Tour The new team trail for 2010 for the southwestern desert
states.
You know, I never understood until recently what is meant by "youth is wasted
on the young". Enjoy it while you can because life will catch up with you as
you get older. I'm 52 and it's been several years since I have had the time to
participate in a local bass tournament. By "participate", I mean being able to
spend enough time on the water so I feel I may win every event or at a minimum,
settle for second. Honestly, I think everyone who launches in a tournament has
(or should have) that same attitude - that they will win it somehow. I marvel
at the guys who breeze into town for a tournament and in 1-2 days, they find
all the spots and fish that took me all winter to find. My hat is off to them.
They must be great anglers. As for myself, it takes a long, long time on the
water for me to feel I'll "do well" (meaning, win). Alas, I've been too busy to
have sufficient time to tournament fish the past few years.

Like it was just yesterday though, I recalled and recited to Bobby Yniguez that
I had won a season-opening team tournament one year by dropshotting 4-inch
Yamamoto Kut Tail worms with partner Brian Hammond, and the next year, came in
second in the season opener by dropshotting 5-inch Yamamoto Senkos with partner
Jamie Cyphers. So yes, dropshotting is a great way to open the season when and
where fish are still deep.

On the other hand, if fish are already shallow by the time the local tournament
season opens where you live, you can bet they're preoccupied with spring
spawning preparations. There is no better Yamamoto bait for shallow bass in
spring than the five-inch Senko. Every spring, many tournaments are won or
anglers place highly with the weightless Yamamoto Senko in shallow water in
spring.

In the FLW Eastern Series season opener on Lake Okechobee, Florida, as we
reported two weeks ago, Team Yamamoto pro Tom Mann Jr placed 5th in that season
opener by fishing shallow spawning areas with the Senko. The weightless Senko
is a spring staple of many top pros.

True, the Senko works all season long, but is at it's very best in shallow
water during the spring. I can't emphasize that enough to you.

Yamamoto's Senko ~ The Seven Weightless Ways By Russ Bassdozer
In the FLW Western Series season opener on Shasta Lake, California, as we
reported a few weeks ago, Team Yamamoto pro Brent Ehrler won that season opener
by fishing a combination of dropshotting Yamamoto (and other) soft baits, and
using Senkos on wacky jigs. FLW reports said Brent was fishing "guts" which
typically tend to be staging areas or avenues bass use at this time of year as
they transition from deep to shallow spawning areas. They may bide their time
patiently staging within the guts, mingling with potential spawning partners,
spreading out from and rolling back into the guts to overnight for a period of
weeks until spring temps seem to stabilize. You may think of it as a
transitional or pivotal area from deep to shallow at this period.

If you desire more info on guts, please read:

the guts with Yamamoto baits, click here to read all about:

Gettin' Wacky Jiggy With It By Russ Bassdozer
Note that Yamamoto now offers Pepper Jigs wacky jigs for sale, and the same
tactics in the story may be used with it (or any) wacky jig.

It's one thing to be a fan in an easy chair armed with snacks to watch the
Super Bowl on TV.

It's another thing to be a player. I hope you get the thrill to be one in a
season-opening local tournament near you.

Thank you for reading Yamamoto's Ezine today.
