Hey Radomir, there isn't a canonical solution yet.  About a year ago I had
worked on a template loader that accomplished a similar purpose to
HOST_THEMES but didn't have the same limitations.  Unfortunately I still
haven't gotten around to putting the last finishing touches on it, but if
you look at that code it should be easy to pull the template loader out and
make it work with your project.
