Hey Tom, I've thought about this before when I built http://mezzathe.me. I ended up deciding that my use case was specific/simple enough that using Cartridge wouldn't have been helpful and rolled my own. With mezzatheme I didn't want/need a shopping cart and assumed people would only ever want to buy one theme at a time (which is the only way you can buy themes on the site).
Whether or not the above applies to you, https://github.com/johnsensible/django-sendfile is very useful for making it so that a particular item can only be downloaded if someone has paid.
