Thank you for your kind words. I believe Stephen introduced me to The
Vagrant.

Fantastic approach. Get simple working, then iterate. You are very much on
the right track; deploying is the right next step.

At this point, if I understand correctly, nothing should be responding on
port 8000. So you are getting the expected behavior.

What do you have in settings.FABRIC["LIVE_HOSTNAME"]? Set it to "
vagrant.example.com". Check the fabfile.py and the files in the deploy
folder; you may also need to add "vagrant.example.com" to "HOST", but I am
rusty. Add to your /etc/hosts/ on its own line: 192.168.x.x
vagrant.example.com

Try deploying again and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, please post your settings.FABRIC dict – minus the
passwords – to a gist.
