An alternative approach which you originally alluded to might be to customise the actual form class and widgets used, without editing templates. There's a setting that gives you an entry point to that: http://mezzanine.jupo.org/docs/configuration.html#accounts-profile-form-class >From that point on you'd be dealing with regular Django form class and form fields, so Django's documentation on those will be relevant.
