I will second the iPython endorsement.

I encourage all Mezzanites to read
http://nerds.airbnb.com/testing-at-airbnb/ and adopt the practices with
regard to local testing. I extend their methodology to all development and
can be heard shouting, "f*** localhost," and, "d*** the runserver. "Works
for me" is never an option. Yes, it adds more work for you the first time,
but day-to-day this will save you far more.
