ok thanks your response gave me the clue
I was using Django 1.7 not 1.7.7
When I uninstalled Django 1.7 and installed 1.7.7 instead all errors
(apart from the expected test runner warning) went away.

Are you creating the project with the "mezzanine-project" command?
Mezzanine currently uses a layout completely different to that of Django.
