Thank you everyone for all your great suggestions! After hours of 
debugging, I think the problem is Google gmail itself. I disabled CAPTCHA 
for clients at http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and the 
emails seem to go through now. No more error when debug=False
