I hate to dig up a very old thread but was there ever any progress on this?
I'm trying to use S3 on my medium sized Cartridge site which consists of around 300 products, each with their own folder containing a couple of images, cads and pdf files. Currently the filebrowser is taking around 1.5 minutes to fetch a page of results on my vagrant box or 25 seconds on a basic heroku hosted site.
