I recently went through the process of upgrading several old sites. There is a post at http://bitofpixels.com/blog/upgrading-to-mezzanine-4/ (which seems to be down at the moment...hope it is temporary) which was extremely helpful.
The best way is to do it in stages, not all in one fell swoop, especially when the switch from South to native Django migrations is introduced and the changes in the project folder layout. You will be able to get it migrated but it will take some work.
