My friend and associate Mike and I often sit and chat over
java. In this case the chatting is not done on IRC or IM,
but at a table in a donut shop, and when you order java they
do not ask you what version you want, they ask you if you
want cream and sugar. I see the computer industry from a
technology perspective and I have my blueberry muffin with
a PC MAGAZINE, Mike sees the computer industry from a business
perspective and has his glazed donut with the New York Times.
I mentioned how much I like my portable USB Iomega CD writer
and Mike mentioned how well he likes the Iomega new management
team and a something about a $12 target. Conversations like
that have given birth to a new section of the Mezzenger
NewsLetter that we will call Market GlimpZ. It will be written
by Mike Zdanowicz and starts today.

Please take a second and drop Mike an eMail with tech market
info or just to say hello - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you want
your comment to be public, hit the mezzage board at

WILL IOMEGA BE ZIPPING ALONG AGAIN?

The one time market darling is back in the news. Most of us are
familiar with Iomega, for their Zip and Jazz drives for removable
storage. This propelled this small capper into a high flying,
stock splitting phenom. But the last 3 years have been tough.
A "cooked books" scandal, along with shaky management sent this
into daytrader doledrums. With a 52 week low of 2 7/8, the longs
have been hit hard.

However, new management team led by Bruce Albertson along with a
new product is making things interesting again. HipZip, a portable
MP3 is now on the market. Offering a low cost alternative to flash
memory for downloading music on the internet. Some key alignments
can make this an industry standard. One brokerage firm has taken
notice - First Montauk Securities gives it a short term strong buy
with a $12 price target. Trading in the $5 range now, makes this
stock worth taking a glimpz at.

*PowerMark
http://www.kaylon.com/power.html
We were searching for a way to organize those hundreds and
sometimes thousand of bookmarks that we all save with out
web browsers when John K. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> came up with a
new perspective for handling his 6000 bookmarks. The trick
is in NOT organizing them at all! John suggested something
called Powermarks which has the power to FIND bookmarks not
organize them. I tried it and after just a few minutes of
using Powermarks I was hooked. Check out some of these features.

-Backup and synchronize your bookmarks across the Internet,
great if you have multiple computers.

-Innovative search interface provides fast and easy access to
your bookmarks - no hierarchies to sort, order and arrange.

-Small, fast, reliable and exceptionally user friendly.

-Browser independent bookmarks, use the same collection with
multiple browsers. Compatible with all popular Windows browsers
including Netscape 3.0...4.7, IE 3.0...5.0 and Opera 2.0...3.6.

-Automatic notification of changed pages (optional).

-Powermarks can also create a new bookmark given only a URL -
the name, keywords and description fields are automatically
retrieved from the actual web page.

-An easy and efficient way to publish read-only bookmark
collections - perfect for libraries and intranets.

-Export bookmarks in a variety of formats, including RTF,
ASCII, and HTML formatted for printing so that the URLs are
visible.

-Color codes, autosaves, easy to modify keywords and many
more features.

Often feature rich software is cluttered with tool bars and
buttons and hard to use - NOT so with Powermarks. This is a
great chunk of code.

It's not freeware nor adware, but after you use this super utility
for just a day, you'll be happy to register it at a reasonable
$25.

1944 Eckert notifies colleagues of patent application

Presper Eckert sent a letter to his colleagues at the Moore
School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania,
advising them that he and John Mauchly would be applying for
a patent on ENIAC, one of the world's first electronic computers.
He requested that other engineers let him know about any
contributions to ENIAC that they would like to patent themselves.
In 1946, the new head of the Moore School requested that all
engineers sign over patent rights to the school: Eckert and Mauchly
resigned in protest and started their own company. Years later,
their patent for the electronic computer was overturned after a
protracted court battle. (Source: http://historychannel.com )
