"I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life.
The problem is that I can't find anybody who can
                       tell me what they want."

I am sure we are all busy preparing for the big day tomorrow, so this is
a short issue. Have a great Thanksgiving. See you next week with a full

______ USING COMMAND LINE FTP ______________________________

by Jay Daniels <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

FTP -- File Transfer Protocol

Using the windows command line ftp client I could issue the command:
c:\>ftp ftp

That would connect me to my ISPs ftp server that I have specified in the hosts file.

Tip: to learn how to use the free windows command line ftp client(program) type C:\>
ftp
then type ftp> ? to get a list of commands. Basically a typical ftp session goes
something
like this.

g:\home\jay>ftp ftp
Connected to alex.pcts.
220 alex.pcts FTP server (Version unknown) Tue Jun 27 10:52:28 PDT 2000) read
y.
User (alex.pcts:(none)): anonymous
331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password.
Password: jay@pcts
230-Welcome, archive user! This is an experimental FTP server. If have any
230-unusual problems, please report them via e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
230-If you do have problems, please try using a dash (-) as the first character
230-of your password -- this will turn off the continuation messages that may
230-be confusing your ftp client.
230-
230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply.

Note: you may have to use DIR here in place of "ls" (that's a lower case L) with some
ftp
servers.
ftp> ls

That will give you a list of files in the current directory. If you want to download
something, it's usually in a sub-directory of the /pub directory on most anonymous ftp
servers.

ftp> cd pub
ftp> cd windows
ftp> cd win98
ftp> ls

Now I get a list of file-names in the /pub/windows/win98 directory on the ftp server. I
want to download a file called filelist.doc...

ftp> hash
ftp> bell
ftp> ascii
ftp> get filelist.doc
#######################################
[RING] a bell sounds when finished and the file called filelist.doc is saved in the
same
directory I started ftp from... hash tell the ftp program to show progress during
transfer.
If you do not use the hash command you will not see the ###### marks.

Ok, that shows you how to get a plain text file. Now to get a binary file i.e. an exe
or
.zip file, change the ascii command above to binary.

Now open a dos window, type ftp, then type a question mark ? to learn more ftp
commands like
put which puts or uploads a file from your computer to the ftp server. If you want to
upload index.html for your homepage, make sure you read your isp's howto and see what
directory to upload to and cd to that directory before using the "put" command. Also,
you
need to use ascii mode for .html files since they are just plain text files.

One last thing. To exit command line ftp enter "bye"

Now you know how to use ftp in pinch.
