It is sad about the demise of SmartCAM especially when it is adequate for most
jobs. On the other hand, I would be very reluctant to recommend that my company
back a dead horse. At some point, I believe SmartCAM will no longer run. Some
new technology will come along that makes hard drives obsolete. Or maybe the
hard drive serial number scheme will change; whatever. At that time, SmartCAM
will be limited to legacy hardware that will not be replaceable.

So when do you want to change systems? when you 1000 programs to re create or
later when you have 10,000 programs to recreate. I personally believe that the
overall lowest cost solution is to bite the bullet and make the transition when
there are fewer programs to recreate. If, on the other hand, most of what you
do is new and not dependent on "make froms" or previous work, there is probably
sound economics in waiting.

Subject: [mfg-smartcam] hi everyone

everyone may think I'm crazy, but I am recommending SmartCam for my company
to purchase... for a price of 3,000 for lathe and Advanced 3-d mill, it is a
fraction of the price of the mainstream products like MasterCam, and it will
still be able to do everything we need for many many years...we don't do
molds or anything too complex but our engineering department makes many
changes so we need something that will deal with that easily and that has
always been SmartCAM's strength... I am an old user of the DOS versions many
years ago and was sad to hear that the plug was pulled on SmartCAM, but I
still think it is perfect for what we need. I don't require training or
support so those aren't factors for me.

Any opinions?

Dan
