I've run multiple installations of SmartCAM for years in order to use
different versions and/or multiple configurations.

The trick to running multiple independent installations of SmartCAM on the
same machine is the location of the SmartCAM.ini file. By default the
SmartCAM.ini file is installed in your Windows folder. This file then
identifies the location of all of your application ini files such as your
pmill.ini file. Your application ini files then identify all the
configuration files such as you pcb files.

The SmartCAM executable files for you main applications, Production Milling,
Production Turning, etc, are located in the SmartCAM system folder (i.e.
C:\Sm9\System\). When one of these applications is started, it looks in this
system folder first for the SmartCAM.ini file. If the SmartCAM.ini file is
not found there, then it will look in the Windows folder. If you move the
SmartCAM.ini file into the SmartCAM system folder, you can then run
additional installations in different folders.

The only limiting factor is that the location of the license key must be
constant. This location is stored in the SmartCAM.ini files:

        [SmartCAM ElanLM]
        Keydir=C:\SM9CFG\KEYDIR

and the Win.ini file located in the Windows folder:

        [ElanLM]
        Keydirectory=C:\SM9CFG\KEYDIR

There are two common ways to create a second installation.

Method A, adds a fresh installation from the CD:

1. Move the SmartCAM.ini file from the Windows folder to the existing
SmartCAM system folder.

2. Start the SmartCAM setup program from the v11 CD and select custom
installation when prompted.

3. Specify a different SmartCAM folder when prompted.

4. Specify a different configuration folder when prompted.

5. Specify the SAME license path when prompted.

6. Repeat for each application.

7. Move the newly created SmartCAM.ini file from the Windows folder to the
SmartCAM system folder of the new installation.

Method B, duplicates an existing installation but is more work:

1. Move the SmartCAM.ini file from the Windows folder to the SmartCAM system
folder.

2. Copy the existing SmartCAM folder to a new location and/or with a new
name.

3. Copy the existing SmartCAM configuration folder to a new location and/or
with a new name.

4. Edit the paths in all the configuration files to the new folder. These
files include:

        The SmartCAM.ini file.
The application ini files (pmill.ini, pturn.ini, etc...)
        The CTK pcb files.
        The Camcon.ini file

Subject: [mfg-smartcam] Running two smart cams

Here's one for you.
I would like to run a PMill for testing macros along with the one I
use to program. How would I go about setting it up to run one for
production and one for testing PCB and Macro files. I know you can
run multiple windows of the same SC. What I want to avoid is having
to change my PMill ini file every time I want to test a PCB.
Anyone have any ideas?
