Michael,
I have been looking for some ideas also. I haven't come up with
anything for speeds & feeds, but there are some good ideas in Sandvik's
application guide - die & mold making. I had to send for it.
www.coromant.sandvik.com/US . Maybe some other companies that make cutting
tools have some literature.
I hope this helps some. I would like to find out more about hard milling and
high speed milling, if I knew where to look. Maybe this will spur some
conversation on the subject. I think it has something to do with SmartCam.
We all use speeds & feeds.

Subject: [mfg-smartcam] High Speed Machining
A non SC related question.
We just did our first high speed machining of a top
die shoe. The shoe is made from D2 material and heat
treated to Rc 58-60.
We cut a pocket in it using a 3/16 dia solid carbide end mill
to a depth of .550" using .005" depth of cuts.
We used 300 sfm giving us a spindle speed of 6111 rpm
and a feed of .001" ipr for a feedrate of 6.11 ipm.
The speed, feed and depth of cut was guessed at
after reading a Modern Machine Shop, high speed
machining article from August 2001.
Anyway the program was an absolute success!
What I was wondering was...
Is there any kind of speed and feed recommendations
that we can use as a guide line for high speed machining
hardened materials ?
Also, depth of cuts...is there a formula for calculating
depth of cuts?
We now have to machine a .553" wide by .500" deep slot through
the same top die shoe and this is what I'm going to use.
A 1/2 dia solid carbide e/m using G41 climb milling
300 sfm = 2291 rpm
.005 ipr = 11.6 ipm
depth of cuts = .005"
Is this a reasonable guess?
Any input is welcome.
