George,

I use Unigraphics daily, replaced Smartcam for me about 5-6+ years ago. I use it for
3-4-5 axis milling, and lathe and some 6 axis laser work is done at our place. The Cam
package has power beyond what you are familiar with from SmartCam. Customizing it,
using old cutting data for new programs, macros using GRIP language, or C++ are
commonly done by users. Tech support is great, and there are two entirely different
ways to post-process(generate code). I still use Smartcam occasionally,(working at
home) and it is still every bit as good as it always has been. The program (UG)is so
HUGE with so many potential ways to get something done, that you will have a longer
learning curve. The quality of your programs will depend on the quality of the models
you use. I also use Mastercam a little, but not enough to form an opinion.
I hope you make the decision that is right for you.

p.s. UG users have a discussion board somewhat similar to this one, but nowhere near
as widely used. The knowledge base Smartcam users have here is truly remarkable and
unique.

We have been using Smartcam and are looking at new
software to do molds. Possibly MasterCAM but if we catch up on past

half the price of MasterCAM.
Can anybody compare the two packages?
