You are correct.... the firewall protection we have at work is because we are running DSL and a huge network.

You should be fine at home with what you have, however Outlook Express is targeted by the viruses because of its intuitive nature.  Basically a virus can procreate out of Outlook without you ever opening mail.  I would recommend using Eudora or something else.
