I started using smartcam in 1990 when I was in tulsa for a few months. One
of the "old" point guys was living out that way and came by with a new copy
of 3D, (V2 I think). Onward and upward from there.

Bob,
You got me having a bad flashback, I had to demo FreeForm to a conference
hall full of users "before" it was released (Point Control had been sending
me new beta versions on a daily basis). Lots of things went wrong, program
crashes, system hanging, incorrectly rendered surfaces, slow showcut, but
It
was still well received and we sold several seats on the spot.
I believe that first release of SmartCAM FreeForm Machining was v4.0 in the
3rd or 4th quarter of 1994, 8 years ago, but it does seem like a lot
longer.
Before FreeForm came out I believe there was a add on from Computervision
called the Surface Machining Module that ran through SmartCAM under UNIX.
I started with SmartCAM v6.0 Production Milling and Production Turning
running under DOS in 1990 and have stuck with SmartCAM ever since. I still
use the v7.0 resource package from 1991 to run Tape-To-Shape.
I don't know if they ever released a version 1 but I heard rumors of it
running on an Apple. I have found a working copy of v2 from 1985 (which now
fits on a single floppy) and a copy of v4.5 from 1988. I seem to be missing
v3 however and there was no v5, (There were a lot of angry people who paid
maintenance that year). I still have v7, v8 and v9 archived on tape backup
(FreeForm originally shipped on 12 floppies), and the v10 and 11 on CDs.
Have we got any SmartCAM history buffs out there with too much time on
their
hands? I would be interested in hearing some other SmartCAM veterans
chronicle the history of our favorite CAM system. I don't have much info
about the years prior to 1990.

If it's good enough for you, It's good enough for me.
I use freeform, have for 12 years.
1 seat.
I have every cam pkg made and have yet to see a reason to change. If I did
,
it would be to Gibbs or Mastercam. Just too much support for Mastercam to
ignor it.
