As mentioned in a recent posting, SmartCAM sill relies on ini files for most
of it's configuration settings, a left over from Windows 3.x running under
DOS. The only SmartCAM settings I know of in the registry are for display in
the "Currently Installed Programs" window of the "Add/Remove Programs"
dialog box in Control Panel. Those settings are modified by the setup and
uninstall programs, not by SmartCAM itself.

What this means to you is that it's relatively easy to transplant SmartCAM
from one PC to another, except for the license.

The following files, if present, need to be copied from the Windows folder
on the source PC to the target PC:

cam.ini
camcon.ini
comm.ini
ctk.ini
edplus.ini
machdef.ini
smartcam.ini

The critical file is the SmartCAM.ini file. The file contains the first of
the path information SmartCAM uses to locate it's files. Open this file and
check the defaults section. Make note of the following entries on the source
PC (The default for a Win95 install is shown):

[Defaults]
SmartCAMPath=C:\Sm9
CFGPath=C:\Sm9CFG\HOME

Copy the listed folders and their contents from the source PC to the same
locations on the target PC.

The only edit required to any Windows file is the addition of the path to
the folder containing the license key files. This is done in the win.ini
file normally found in the Windows folder. Make note of the following entry
on the source PC (The default for a Win95 install is shown):

[ElanLM]
Keydirectory=C:\SM9CFG\KEYDIR

Edit the win.ini file on the target PC to include this section.

The only other path considerations are addressed by the individual
application ini files found in the CFGPath.

afab.ini
amill.ini
awedm.ini
ffm.ini
pmill.ini
pturn.ini

If you did a default installation the paths should be OK. If you have any
custom CTK panels or configuration files in other folders, make sure they
are copied as well.

You can acquire a new license from EDS,
http://support.plms-eds.com/smartcam/license_help.shtml, or you can use the
VolumeID program,
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/misc.shtml#VolumeId, to change the
hard drive label on the target PC to match the source.

Subject: [mfg-smartcam] SmartCAM V11.5

In the past six months one of our computers which had SmartCAM on it had
the hard drive reformatted. In addition the CD containing all the SmartCAM
installation files was lost or destroyed. What is needed is someone that
has the knowledge to direct me on how I might burn a new CD with the files
from our existing SmartCAM computer so they may be loaded on another
computer. Or not being able to do that, someone that might be willing to
burn a copy of their CD for me to load a second computer with the
Production Milling and the Advanced Turning applications.

You may reach me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have any questions or
assistance.

Thank you.

Joe
