Personally, I have owned and have been very happy with IBM Thinkpad laptops.  Mine is very old (P100 vintage 1998) and still humming along so I don't know about their newer varieties.  I have a couple of friends that absolutely love their Sony laptops.
For some reason Dells have never excited me.  We use a lot of Dell and Micron equipment at work and the service is very good.  Driver availability on the website very good.  And the reliability has been pretty good.  I have had to replace a few motherboards in the Micron PCs and a couple of the older Dells were problematic.  The New Dell's have been reliable.

Hi all,

While I recognize that Dell indeed makes a fine product, you should also know that they don't make ANY of their own laptops. In fact, there are only a small number of laptop manufacturers in the world who produce them for everyone else. The only two I am familiar with who manufacture their own are Sony and Toshiba. I believe there are one or two others, but don't know the companies. In Dell's defense, even though their laptops (and just about everything else) are made in China, their products are made to THEIR specifications, and the support is good. Then again, most all other computer manufacturers have moved production to China also.

On soapbox:

Send your thanks for the loss of American jobs to Bill Clinton who pushed for "Most favored nation" status to be granted to China as a trade partner.

Off soapbox.

Anyway, yes I know that the Dell product and support is good, but I was looking for a broader spectrum of recommendations. Anyone out there use a Toshiba or IBM? I did get a Sony recommendation; anyone else?
