We had a small problem with that at NASA. We also had a small problem of it showing rust. I think it's a purity issue. There's probably some component in 316 that doesn't fully dissolve into the alloy that magnetizes and rusts.

We used 304 stainless instead. I believe the strengths and machining characteristics are similar. For higher strengths we used 15-5PH and 17-4PH.

Is anyone aware of magnetic 316 Stainless steel or a machining process that can introduces magnetism in to 316 SS. This is the second time this is happening to me and I am having a difficult time with my customer excepting magnetic stainless steel parts.
